The similarities between New York, NY, & Cairo, Egypt, are explored, contrasting these two cities with Chicago, Ill. The small-grained character of land uses, the active street life, & the diversity & mixing of peoples in New York & Cairo are noted, as well as their emphasis on small-scale commercial & informal activities. These characteristics contrast markedly with the large-scale bifurcation of Chicago's population along the dimensions of race & class, with the latter's large-grained segregation of land uses, as well as with its less diverse & less visible street life. Explanations of these similarities & differences are explored, including rent regulations, approaches to land use controls or lack of them, & the urban economic base. It is argued that the similarities between New York & Cairo are only superficial, & their very different positions in the world economy are contrasted. 4 Photographs. Modified AA
